Trigger Point Therapy

What are Trigger Points?

Trigger Points are discrete, focal, hyperirritable spots, a palpable nodule located in taut bands of skeletal muscles. They produce pain locally and in referred patterns specific to each muscle. Trigger points often accompany chronic musculoskeletal disorders.

How to release Trigger Points?
There are 2 methods to release the trigger points
-
Ischaemic Compression- This involves a squeeze grip or direct compression over the trigger point for 30 -120 seconds, which can release or soften the nodule.
-
Dry Needling- Inserting sterile acupuncture needles directly into the taut band of muscle.

After releasing the trigger point it is important to mobilise the muscle through its full range of motion followed by cryotherapy (ice-pack)

What causes Trigger Points?
Trigger Point occur because of muscle overuse, muscle trauma or injury, psychological stress and nutritional deficiencies. They often arise from sustained repetitive use of muscles during certain activities like lifting heavy objects or working on a computer all day. Myofascial trigger point generally arise from a combination of factors.
